Może to głupie, ale - THE, A, AN

Witam. Otóż chodzi mi o to, kiedy tak w ogóle przed rzeczownikami (i czy tylko?) dajemy THE, A, lub AN... I chodzi mi tu o sytuacje, a nie o to, że A to przed spółgłoską itp... Chodzi mi o sytuację, kiedy się tego używa.
