The Sun Also Rises - fragment

While I dressed I heard Brett put down glasses and then a siphon, and then heard them talking.

While I was dressing I heard Brett put down glasses and then a siphon, and then heard them talking.

Tak też mi się wydaje. Co myślicie?
podczas gdy sie ubralem
vs
podczas gdy sie ubieralem
Opinions are all over the place on this subject. I'd only say, authors often bend / break grammar rules.
No tak, ale nie powinno być when? Przecież while lepiej działa z continuous i when z simple.
To me 'when I dressed' would mean 'after I dressed'.

Cytat:

Agreed.

NB. heard them talking = heard the glasses and the siphon talking :-)
no to

No dobrze, dziękuję za wszystkie odpowiedzi.

Pozdrawiam

...was dressing… produces an open-ended homogeneous state. I could have started dressing long before I heard anything and could have continued dressing long after I heard them talking.

While Joan dictated, Jane wrote.
Those are simultaneous events, occurring at the same time relative to the speech time, and, presumably, of the same duration.

While the hot weather lasted, Jane slept on the verandah.
While I dressed I heard Brett put down glasses and then a siphon, and then heard them talking.

While Joan dictated, Jane wrote.

I'd say the other way round:
While Jane wrote, Joan dictated.
>>>While Jane wrote, Joan dictated.
Nie, bo najpierw jedna osoba musi otworzyc usta i wymowic slowo zanim ta druga cos napisze. Oczywiscie ta druga moze czekac, ale 'slowo' musi byc pierwsze.
