We use inversion when we move a NEGATIVE VERB (e.g. never, nowhere, not only) to the beginning of a sentence
1. inversion after 'negative' adverbs concerning a time relationship -
NO SOONER ... THAN (No sooner had I put the phone down Than it rung again)
HARDLY/SCARCELY/BARELY ... WHEN (Hardly had I got my breath back when it was time to go again)
2. ~ with phrases that use 'NOT'
NOT UNTIL he apologises will I speak to him again.
NOT FOR ONE MINUTE do I imagine they'llcome back
3. ~ with phrases that use 'only'
ONLY AFTER several weeks did she begin to recover
ONLY THEN did he remember he hadn't got his keys
ONLY RECENTLY ...
ONLY LAST WEEK...
ONLY FIVE MINUTES EARLIER
4. ~ after 'negative' adverbs concerning frequency (NEVER, RARELY, SELDOM, HARDLY EVER)
NEVER have I been so taken aback.
HARDLY EVER did he wear a suit.
5. ~with 'NO'
