Czytelnictwo wśród młodzieży spada. Czy zgadzasz się z tą opinią? (dłuższa wersja)

Some sociologists, researchers, educators and parents are worried that today's teenagers do not read as much as young people in previous generations. Their concern is probably unjustified.

There seems to be evidence which shows that despite common opinion teenagers still read books. It is enough to look at the sheer madness that accompanies the publication of every part of the Harry Potter series or the Twilight Saga. Some may argue that young people's interest in this kind of literature results from the latest fashion. Whatever the reason, the fact is that these titles have millions of teenage readers all over the world.

Some people have a tendency to glorify the past and claim that a few decades ago teenagers were better educated, hungry for knowledge and eager to read literature. They may not remember their school days, when hardly anybody was keen to read books from the obligatory reading list. The attitude is the same now – young people do not want to be forced to read the classics. That does not mean, however, that they have lost interest in literature altogether.

What has changed, though, is the source of literature nowadays. Young people have access to a variety of media, so they are not limited to bookshops and libraries which have always offered traditionally printed books. These days they can find some titles on the Internet or download audiobooks. Young people do not spend much in bookshops, so if the opinion that they do not read as much as in the past is based on sales figures, it may be true.

To sum up, the worries that teenagers read less than their predecessors are probably a little exaggerated. Their interest in literature may not be shown by the number of books they buy and they may be quite selective in their choice of reading, but some data shows that young people can still be captivated by literature.
