I am a big cinema fan. I spend a lot of time watching movies and it is difficult for me to choose just one favourite film. There is though one motion picture which I have seen many times and surely will see many more.
Funny Girl is an american, romantic musical film from 1968. It is directed by William Wyler. The movie is based on a stage musical of the same title, both written by Isobel Lennart. Funny Girl is about life and career of an actress Fanny Brice.
Fanny, played by marvellous Barbra Streisand, was a poor, young Jew, dreaming of becoming a Broadway star, however no one wanted to hire her, because she didn't look like the other girls. She accidentally enter a roller skating number in which her comedy talent was discovered. After the performance she talked for the first time with Nick Arnstein, played by Omar Sharif, a gambler and her future husband. Soon after that she all of sudden met Florenz Ziegfeld, a very famous and respected Broadway impresario, who helped her becoming a star. During the film we watch Fanny's journey in becoming famous, her whirland relationship with Nick and breakdown of their marriage.
Funny Girl was a huge success with a lot of Oscars, Grammy and Golden Globes nominations. Songs such as 'People', 'Funny girl', or 'My Man' were great hits, covered many times.
