This article is about Christina Lamb and her feelings and adventures related to the stay in Brazil. She explains how to survive in a country where prices have risen 200 billion-fold in a generation. It’s hard for her because she has got a lot of problems through inflation. For example trouble with paying for lunch. Inflation is so important topic in her life that even through breakfasts she talks about inflation indices. She says also that she keeps her money invested in the so-called “overnight” fund in the bank and uses cheques like cash because it’s more comfortable. She recalls too about difficulties in paying the bills or ordering air tickets. Christina says that “the most difficult decision is not what to buy but how to pay”. Through of the inflation government introduced a new currency – “real cruzeiro” and another three zeros were knocked off to make life easier. But that don’t help a lot. When Lamb was in holiday in England she couldn’t belive that prices don’t change daily in normal countries. Even young people in Brazil lead up small talks througout the day about the best deposit certificates available as they are to discuss about new applications on the phone. Christina says also about her weekly shoppings. Every week she has absolutely no idea how much the total will be, even though her purchases rarely vary. Inflation is so high that al local supermarket a packet of butter currently costs more than a kilo of best rump steak. She recalls that the inflationary addiction has seen off four finance ministers in the last year. At the end she concludes that life in Brazil is very uncomfortable but this can be fast change in the next few years.
