My only problem is....I'm not sure if this is what is meant by transformation !
5. moze jednak tak?
You are certainly not getting any more money from me.
Yup !
give - getting

and also

8. I had hardly begun to speak before someone interrupted me.
Hardly had I begun to speak, BEFORE someone interrupted me.
Sorry !
Ja bym wywalil 'before'. IMHO
zamiast before bym wstawil when
8. I had hardly begun to speak before someone interrupted me.

Hardly had I begun to speak, than someone interrupted me.
felt more natural for me...but then I wasn't sure if using the BEFORE was obligatory in the exercise.

And please....IMHO ! That's my line ! :)
Obligatory jest ze ma sie zaczynac od 'hardly' i zachowac sens imho :)
Ahhhhh....now I get it !
I wonder how much trouble I'll cause if I say all three words are OK...but they are slightly different in intonation. imho of course ;)
Moze jeden z tych trzech mial byc 'then' not 'than'. Wciaz, jezeli ktorys moglby pasowac, to bym wybral 'when' imho :)
No....definately meant 'than'
Than is correct, it may not be everyones choice...and I did say they all have a very slightly different slant to them - but I would use than (imhho)! :)
OK, I kinda got it what you mean, /by using 'than'/ but it just aint doin it for me :)
No...and why should it?
It does sound more formal than any of the other options.
However, there is a tiny difference in meaning (if one needs it) for each of them... which in those famous words...

"Gets lost somewhere in the translation"

As I've said before...we are arguing semantics. What I do find interesting is the depth of 'technical knowledge' of the English language most of you on the forum here have.
In fact, I'll tell you a secret, it scares me to death ! :)fyeo ;)
I'd say we're playing, not arguing, with semantics and chances are you're absobloodylutely correct. I just can't see it.
fyeo, wow! :)
While I find a good explanation (someone elses)
Have a look at this
http://www.zug.com/pranks/harvard-vs-mit/index02.html

I wrote knowlegde earlier today instead of knowledge ;)
3. When. Used especially after hardly and scarcely: I had scarcely walked in the door than the commotion started.
I think that we are both quite correct...imho, as always. :)
Pakk podsunal 'when', ja wybralem bz bz bz bez /i wydaje mi sie ze moze byc/, 'than' hmmmm. No opinion imho :)
