Apparent(ly) applies to that which can
readily be seen or perceived.
I’ll let you in on a secret. Most adverbs are unnecessary. They clutter your sentences. Choose a strong verb instead. In English, verbs rule. Here you don’t need “apparently” or “superficially” (OMG), or any other of that sort; they strive to modify and negate “was brave” at the same time.
He feigned bravery, but
in reality, he was terrified.
He appeared brave, but
in reality, he was terrified.
