we use the:
-to talk about sth specific, sth we have mentioned before or which is already known.
-with nouns which are unique
-with the names of rivers, seas, oceans, etc.
-with the names of countries when they include words such as state, kingdom, republic, etc.
-with the names of musical instruments, dances, museums, hotels,theatres, newspapers
- with nationalities (the French) and names of families (the Browns)
- with historical periods/ events
-with the words morning, evening, station, city, village, etc.
-with adjectives used as nouns to refer to a grup of people e.g. the poor, the blind.
-with only, last, first used as adjectives and with the superlative degree of adjectives/ adverbs
-with titles when the name of the person is not mentioned (the Prince, but: Prince Charles)
