The topic of my presentation is "Life and work of independent game developers". First, I want to explain independent game and describe developers. Idea independent video game was very popular of few years and which means game develop by small team or one people without financial support. People who works in this industry is hothead, which doesn't have permanent source of income. For this reason, indie developer is very difficult and satisfaction profession. The indie game isn't limit by team of CEOs, economists and censors. Authors decide will look like production. Developers very often read opinion about our game on forum and expand the game.
I want to describe one of the best independent game developer – Edmund McMillen. He was assume Team Meat with Tommy Refenes and released in 2010 the great production Super Meat Boy. The game is simple platform game where the title hero Meat Boy must rescue girlfriend Bandage Girl. Today, Super Meat Boy is one of the bestseller independent game. Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes say about problems with develop and release the game. They worked on the game around 11 months. McMillen and Refenes spent all the time at the computer and created new part of game. They want to make this production had part of their personality. When the Super Meat Boy was released on a PC then the game has become very popular. Developers had hoped that the game will also be popular on Xbox360, but they had problems. Super Meat Boy hadn't available in Xbox Marketplace. The problem solved and the game showed on Xbox store after 8 hours of release. The game was sold around 22 000 on the first day. Three years ago, Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl released very controversial game "The Binding of Isaac". Plot of this game loosely based on Old Testament. Isaac Mom want sacrifice his son for God, but Isaac escaped to basement. The game was very controversial and ugly, but player loves this production. Edmund develop strange game, because he was traum of childhood. Developer was bring up in born-again Christians environment. Her uncle and auntie was alcoholics and druggies, but they was very religious. Edmund McMillen recalls in interview: "Everybody's going to Hell. I'm going to go to Hell because I'm playing Dungeons&Dragons, I'm playing Magic The Gathering, and you're chastised for every little thing. Which is kind of ironic, because it's coming from these born-again Christians who lived the most horrible sinful lives possible before they became Christians and saved. They were all recovering alcoholics, drug addicts, everything else.". Developer has problem with religion and show this in The Binding of Isaac.
