własnie sie zastanawiałam nad polskim odpowiednikiem 'the joke is on sb', ale nic nie wymysliłam, to chyba zależy od kontekstu i nie nłumaczy sie dosłownie tego wyrażenia tak samo.
Wcale nie musi chodzić o czyjeś zawstydzenie. Chodzi o sytuacje, kiedy los tak jakby kpił z nas, spotyka nas cos, czego sie nie spodziewamy. Jak w tym zdaniu :

"I put off having children because I wanted to be married and have now found out that the joke was on me. I have been undergoing fertility treatment for the past 2 years"

to tobie powinno być głupio ;)
